You can trace Umatilla County history back to 1862 when prospectors followed the area gold rushes. Umatilla City became a bustling port city which brought livestock to graze on the lush grasslands of the county.  Lewis and Clark traveled through the area. Oregon Trail pioneers traveling over the Blue Mountains passed through the area; many settling down here.  It wasn’t until the arrival of the railraod in 1881 that the area started to be developed into dry land wheat farming.

The Umatilla County Pioneers Association Annual Reunion harks back to the early days when men, women and families arrived fresh off the Oregon Trail.
